The Building of A MATTRESS
What to look for:
|
Coil Spring Unit: is one of the most important mattress features, yet it's hidden. Coil count is based on a full sized mattress; for use as a consistant standard. Coil count can increase to as high as 700 coils
per unit on our top line 368-offset unit. Keep in mind the wire gauge will also change. The higher the gauge, the thinner the wire. Our higher end units use 12 1/2 gauge on our 368-offset unit, which is one of the heaviest units the industry makes. On lesser priced units, over-all firmness will be there initially, durability will be a problem over a longer period of time.
Ticking:
The outermost layer. This will vary greatly in quality. Most, however, have a blend of polyester and nylon, cotton blend, and cotton. The better quality the mattress, the rule of thumb would be a higher grade of damask cover.
Quilting and Padding:
Quilting involves a the combination of layers of polyurethane foam, and or Dacron batting. The design and size of the quilt will have an effect on firmness or softness. The larger the quilt, generally more foam is used, and the softer the feel.
Middle Padding:
Lies just below the outer quilt. Most often the layering is foam, which would vary in density and thickness, in some manufacturing cotton can be used. Insulating pads lie directly on the spring unit, the pad is a combination of synthetics and natural fibers blended and glued together. Insulating pads come in a variety of thickness'. A combination of padding will determine firmness of the mattress.
Edge-Guards:
Are added to the perimeter of the mattress for extra
support. Generally added to a higher end unit. Handles are available upon request only. The industry advises against them. They are not meant to support the weight of the mattress, but used to reposition the mattress on the box spring. The best handle if used should be attached to the spring unit.
When purchasing a mattress and box spring,
they should be purchased as a set.
The average life of a mattress set will be approximately
12 years on a
15 year warranty.
